 Course description The main goal of the course «The History of Ukraine and Ukrainian culture» is the formation of system of knowledge about Ukrainian history and culture. The academic discipline devotes the main attention to the building of the Ukrainian nation and its state formation and concentrates on bringing up professional competences of students. The syllabus of the academic discipline has been worked out for teaching students how to think critically, work with scientific literature, analyze and compare different historical facts, represent points of view, share opinions with others. Study of Ukrainian history and culture is of great importance for giving priority to the problems of correlation of national and international notions, genesis of cultural phenomena, interactive processes of Ukrainian and world culture. 
 Course content
Module 1. The history and culture of Ukraine in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period.  Theoretical aspects of culture
Topic 1. The origins of the Ukrainian people and its statehood.  The essence of culture. Main conceptions of culture. Culture and pre-Christianian believes of ancient Slavs
Topic 2. Ukraine of the princely age (the 11th – 12th centuries). Origins of Ukrainian culture. Culture of Kyivan Rus and literary sources of Kyivan Rus
Topic 3. Galicia-Volhynia (the 13th – the first half of the 14th centuries).  Culture of Galitia-Volhynia
Topic 4. The Ukrainian lands in the Grand Principality (Duchy) of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland (the second half of the 14th – the first half of the 16th centuries).  Renaissance influences in Ukrainian culture. Trends in Ukrainian literature of the XIV – XVI centuries
Topic 5. The Cossack age (the second half of the 16th – the first half of the 17th centuries). The National Liberation War of the Ukrainian people in the mid-17th century. Formation of the Ukrainian state.  The phenomenon of Ukrainian baroque
Topic 6. The Great "Ruin". The Hetmanate (1659 – 1687)
Topic 7. Abolition of the Ukrainian autonomous statehood in the 18th century. The epoch of Enlightenment and Romanticism in Ukraine (the end of 18th – the 1st half of the 19th centuries)
Module 2. Ukraine in the modern and recent periods (the 19th – the early 21th centuries)
Topic 8. Ukraine in the Russian and Austrian Empires (the late 18th – the first half of the 19th centuries). The epoch of Enlightenment and Romanticism in Ukraine (the end of 18th – the 1st half of the 19th centuries) Cultural aspects of Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood
Topic 9. Ukraine in the Capitalist Modernization of Economy (the second half of the 19th – the early 20th centuries). Enlightenment, Romanticism in Ukrainian arts
Topic 10. The Ukrainian Lands and cultural process in Ukraine during the First World War (1914 – 1918). Ukrainian National Democratic Revolution (1917 – 1921). Ukrainian culture on the path of National Renaissance (the 2nd half of the 19th – two first decades of the 20th centuries)
Topic 11. The struggle for the revival of the Ukrainian statehood (1917 – 1920)
Topic 12. The interwar period in the history of the Ukrainian people (1921 – 1939). The Western Ukrainian lands between the two World Wars (1921 – 1939).  Ukrainian culture between two World Wars
Topic 13. Ukraine during the Second World War (1939 – 1945)
Topic 14. Sociopolitical and socioeconomic development of Ukraine (1945 – 1991). Scientific achievements of Soviet scientists. Modernism in Ukrainian arts of the 20th century. Basic tendencies of the development of Ukrainian culture of 20th – beginning 21st centuries
Topic 15. The national and state revival of the Ukrainian people. Independent Ukraine in the modern world. Cultural processes in independent Ukraine
 Learning outcomes The names and the description of competencies, the formation of which the discipline "The History of Ukraine and Ukrainian culture” provides:
- knowledge of Ukrainian history and current events;
- knowledge of geo-political issues, changes, and decision making;
- knowledge about the culture of a learned country representing "panoramic”, outward perspective;
- the ability to analyze social, political, economic processes, events, phenomena of the past and present Ukraine;
- the ability to present and argue the information on history of Ukraine and it culture;
- the ability to define and characterize peculiarities of political and socioeconomic order of the state, its foreign and domestic policy;
- determination of the basic forms and trends in culture of Ukraine; kinds, styles and genres of fine arts.
- ability to function as a member of another culture;
- effective intercultural communication skills including language skills;
 - appreciation of own and others’ personal and cultural norms;
- the ability to prove independently standpoints and take responsibility for the correctness of argumentation;
- the ability to take part in intercultural interaction, where a person, as a social agent possesses an experience of several cultures;
- the ability to take part in intercultural interaction;
- knowledge and understanding the similarities and differences between the native culture and the culture of the target country.
