ABOUT THE FACULTY

History.  Faculty of Computer Information Technologies (FCIT) of Ternopil National Economic University (TNEU) was founded in 1994. The first dean of the faculty was the Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor Anatoliy Sachenko. Currently, the faculty is headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Mykola Dyvak.

Employment.  The main focus of FCIT activities is to provide the highest quality of educational services and to train specialists for one of the leading areas of economy - the information technology industry. Despite the economic crisis, the demand for IT professionals has increased. It is confirmed by data provided by website of the IT-Ukraine Association. The gross income of the companies of the information technology industry in Ukraine annually grows by about 50% and exceeds $2 billion. The number of companies in the IT industry is continuously growing. The average wage of specialists in this industry is on average $2,000 a month, which is the highest in Ukraine.

In 2016-2020, total tax revenues from IT to the budget will amount to 36 billion USD, while the IT industry's contribution to GDP in 2020 will reach 5.7%. At the same time, the industry will grow 6.2 times by 2020 and will reach 182 billion UAH. (3.2 times in US dollars, to 7.7 billion USD). In addition, according to the association NASSCOM, one new programmer involved in the industry, creates up to 4 additional jobs in related industries, which is also true for Ukraine. According to the forecast in 2020, only the IT industry will create more than 400 thousand jobs in other sectors of the economy. These data indicate the huge potential of the industry: IT by 2020 can compete for the second place in the export of all services in Ukraine.

According to statistics, the increase in the number of new jobs in the industry is expected to reach 20,000 annually, and in 2020 the industry will employ up to 180,000 IT professionals. Such growth dynamic is not shown by any of Ukrainian industries.

The positive trends in the information technology industry are also felt by the FCIT, where more than 90 percent of FCIT graduates are recruited in the first year after obtaining a specialist diploma.

Specialties.  Since the foundation of the faculty, the range of training fields and specialties of information technologies has considerably expanded. In the Western Ukraine it is the unique faculty, where undergraduate and graduate training is organized in five specialties (see table 1): economics (economic cybernetics); system analysis; information systems and technologies; cyber security; computer science; software engineering; computer engineering; automation and computer-integrated technologies. At the same time, applicants for the specialty and directions of the faculty training are guaranteed a continuous training scheme: Bachelor - Master - Postgraduate study for obtaining a Ph.D. degree.

Today there are five departments at the faculty: Economic Cybernetics and Informatics; Information and Computing Systems and Management; Computer Engineering; Computer Science; Specialized Computer Systems. There are over 1600 students and postgraduates that receive different forms of education. There are more than 900 students getting a full-time education, about 600 - extramural education, including about 150 studying in distant structural units. There is a tendency for increase in the percentage of full-time students (more than 900 students), which is not typical for higher educational institutions in Ukraine due to the difficult conditions of the demographic situation.

The training is carried out by the highly qualified teaching staff.  The main achievement of the faculty is its human potential, which has been forming for almost two decades and is the basis for the training of highly skilled specialists.

The faculty staff includes: 6 Doctors of Sciences, professors, 59 Candidates of Sciences (PhD), associate professors, 26 lecturers. In addition, 6 Doctors of Sciences work in cooperation with other structural subdivisions. This allows to create a powerful training system to provide highly qualified staff, Candidates and Doctors of Sciences at the faculty, as well as a Specialized Scientific Council for defense of candidate's thesis for two specialties: Computer Systems and Components; Information Technology.

According to the staffing potential of ICT researchers, the faculty occupies one of the leading positions among the related faculties of higher education in Western Ukraine.

Scientific and research work. Since 2002 the department publishes the specialized scientific and technical magazine «Computing» in three languages. The scientific schools were formed and work under the guidance of professors, Doctors of s]Sciences A. Sachenko, Ya. Nikolaychuk, D. Bodnar, M. Dyvak and O. Berezkyy. Annually, the staff of the faculty publish on average 300 scientific articles, including more than 30 articles in foreign professional journals and materials of international conferences. More than 20 employees of the faculty are quoted in publications with Scopus index of more than 3.

International activity. An important feature of the current FCIT is the large-scale international activity in the scientific and educational area. With the support of the Academic Council of the University and the administration, such activity has become a priority at the FCIT. More than 30 faculty members were trained at leading universities in Europe, North America and Asia. For now at the University level, some agreements have been signed. This allows to have large-scale scientific and educational cooperation in the information technology area with universities of USA, Greece, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Poland, China, Romania, Belarus, Lithuania and other countries. Based on these agreements, the scientists of FCIT together with scientists from foreign countries executed more than 10 international bilateral projects and projects for programs INTAS, NATO, STCU, NSF and CRDF.

Student Science. Better quality of training for specialists in the area of information technology is achieved through the development of student science at the faculty. At each department there are scientific clubs, students take part in scientific researches. Annually, FCIT students publish more than 30 works in the leading professional editions of Ukraine and abroad, in the materials of international conferences. Also they make more than 100 reports at various scientific forums. At the faculty there is a school of sports programming. Annually FCIT students publish more than 30 works in the leading professional editions of Ukraine and abroad, in the materials of international conferences. Also they make more than 100 reports at various scientific forums. At the faculty there is a school of sports programming. Four years in a row the works of the FCIT students occupy prize-winning places at the All-Ukrainian competition of student's scientific works in the field of computer science and cybernetics with more than 200 works.

A good tradition at the Faculty of Computer Information Technologies of Ternopil National Economic University is holding a school-seminar "Modern computer information technologies", ACIT'2015 among young scientists ({http://acit.tneu.edu.ua/}), which allows researchers to test the results of their work internationally and receive a publication in the respective collection.

Material and informational support of the educational process. At FCIT there is an annual renewal of computer and research laboratories. All students and professors have free unlimited internet access through the wireless networks. Also free licensed software is received due to cooperation with leading software companies and computer hardware companies.
